We all want to watch Baylor football get over the hump and compete for a national championship.
But the 2018 season was a huge disappointment for the Bears.
Baylor’s first win in over a decade came against the Washington Huskies.
This was the first time since 2011 that the Bears beat the Huskies in the postseason.
With two wins and two losses, Baylor has now lost all six of its games in the Big 12.
The Bears have been a top-10 team for a while now, but their postseason run has been a disappointment.
Baylor will face TCU, which has not lost since December, in the national championship game, but they will need to beat the Horned Frogs in the Cotton Bowl if they want to be serious contenders.
The Baylor Bears have only been ranked in the AP Top 25 since September.
In the rankings since then, the Bears have lost six games and lost to three of their four conference opponents.
That’s not good enough to compete for the national title.
The Bears were ranked #13 before the season.
The season has now been a total disaster.
This will be the third time in the last four years that Baylor has been ranked outside the top 25 in the final AP poll.
If Baylor wants to be a national champion, they have to beat a team that’s ranked outside of the top 10 in the poll.
If the Bears lose to the Huskers in the bowl game, they will be down one of their top two targets in receiver Tre Mason.
They need to go out and get Mason.
The most likely target is Oklahoma State quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was the consensus top quarterback in the nation heading into the season, but he has struggled in the past.
He has not thrown for more than 300 yards in a game since Week 1 and has never been able to get past the end zone.
Another player that could be an early target for Baylor is running back Melvin Gordon, who has yet to play a full season for the Sooners.
Gordon has had three 1,000-yard rushing seasons in the Pac-12, and he has been the Baylor RB2 in each of the past two seasons.
He is the best back in the country in terms of rushing yards per game, averaging 2.6 yards per carry.
Gordon could be a good player for Baylor, but if he does not start playing at an elite level, it could be time to change the name of the team to the Baylor Bear.
One player that will be hard to miss for the Baylor Bears is quarterback Bryce Petty.
Petty has been outstanding for the Owls since he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He’s been a Heisman Trophy finalist, has played in three bowl games and is currently the all-time leader in total offense.
Petty was named the Big XII Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 923 rushing yards.
He had 10 touchdowns in the regular season.
Petty also threw for more touchdowns than any quarterback in college football history, averaging nearly five yards per attempt.
A big part of Baylor’s success has been Petty’s ability to throw deep into the red zone.
Baylor is only 27th in the league in red zone efficiency this season, with the Bears averaging a league-low 6.8 yards per completion.
That average is the lowest of any team in the conference.
Petty is an absolute nightmare for defenses in the redzone, and the Bears should be able to take advantage of his size and strength to make big plays.
There is no question that the Baylor team has the talent to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
However, it would be a complete disaster for the team if it is unable to reach the postseason for the first year in a row.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Baylor offense has been inconsistent and has had several struggles.
The team has only scored 13 points in its past two games, both losses to Utah and Iowa State.
Despite that, Baylor is not a good offensive team.
It is ranked 18th in total defense, averaging a measly 3.3 yards per play.
It ranks 29th in points allowed per game and 29th against the run.
The only reason the Bears are ranked ahead of the Longhorns is because of how bad their offense has played.
That has not stopped Baylor from being an excellent offensive team, and they are expected to do just that in 2018.
The key for Baylor in 2018 is that it can win games at home.
The offense can play a complete game, and Baylor is one of the better teams in the entire country in this regard.
